7 Common Lawn Care Mistakes to Avoid in Texas

blogOctober 20, 2026October 20, 2026

You water, mow, and fertilize, yet the grass still comes in thin and patchy. Sounds familiar? Here’s the twist: the problem may be the care itself, not a lack of it. The EPA warns that watering too often can waste water and contribute to runoff.

If you’re noticing signs the lawn needs attention, don’t immediately add more water or fertilizer. Work out what’s wrong first. That step pays off whether you handle the yard yourself or bring in help such as CitiTurf lawn care services in North Texas.

Here are seven mistakes to avoid.

1. Why Is Overwatering A Common Lawn Care Mistake In Texas?

Dry-looking grass makes plenty of homeowners reach for the sprinklers. If the ground’s still damp, more water can hurt, since roots need air as well as moisture. Check a few spots, too, because sun and sprinkler coverage aren’t even.

Ever watched sprinkler water just slide down your driveway? That’s your soil saying it can’t drink any faster.

2. How Can Mowing Your Lawn Too Short Damage Texas Grass?

Chopping your yard super short feels efficient, but it completely blows up in your face. Grass produces energy through its blades, so cutting it too short reduces its ability to recover. Keep stripping it bare, and the turf will wither away while losing all power to recover.

Every individual grass type has its own sweet spot. Bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass like different heights. So, know which type is in your yard before adjusting the mower. Whatever the type, never cut more than a third of its height at once.

3. Why Can Applying Too Much Fertilizer Harm Your Lawn?

Pale grass makes fertilizer look like a quick fix, but adding more doesn’t always help. Overdo the nitrogen and grass can shoot up too fast, while sloppy spreading may damage the lawn.

Always do a soil test before adding lawn nutrients. It will help you see what’s missing, if anything, so healthy grass doesn’t get fed for nothing. Read the label, measure your yard, and check your spreader, since a badly set one can drop far more in some spots than others.

4. What Happens When You Ignore Texas’s Seasonal Lawn Care Needs?

Have you ever kept watering your lawn thinking it was still July after the nights have turned cool? Dormant grass can’t utilize the extra water and fertilizer, which results in runoff that feeds weeds or fungus, which causes your lawn to have patches of dead grass when it greens up in spring. Set your sprinklers off only when you haven’t had a good rain, and put that fertilizer away until next spring when growth begins.

5. How Can Choosing the Wrong Grass Type Lead to Lawn Problems?

Do not compare your lawn with your neighbor’s. Certain varieties crave blazing sun, while alternative types tolerate light shade. Heavy foot traffic, moisture levels, and your mowing schedule impact performance too.

Bermudagrass loves bright, busy spaces but fails in shadows. Conversely, St. Augustine handles dim spots better but demands unique maintenance. Your sunny front yard and shady fence line may need different grass varieties. Shop for the yard you have, not a photo.

6. Why Is Ignoring Weeds, Pests, and Lawn Diseases a Costly Mistake?

A thinning patch is easy to shrug off or blast with the nearest weedkiller, but neither explains what’s going on. Weeds often move in where grass is already thin, and brown patches can have several causes.

Some signs the lawn needs closer attention include:

  • Patches that spread or keep coming back
  • Grass thinning in one area but not another
  • New weeds appearing where the lawn used to be thick

Note when the changes began and find the cause before treating anything. Not sure if that patch is spreading? Snap a photo every few days.

7. Why Is Neglecting Soil Quality and Drainage Bad for Your Lawn?

Where the grass grows counts too. Compacted dirt blocks water from soaking in and stops roots from growing. Poor drainage also creates soggy spots that last. Don’t assume Collin County yards share identical dirt profiles.

Test your soil to understand its condition and identify any underlying problems.  A soil test can help identify nutrient issues, while a drainage check can reveal areas where water collects. If simple changes don’t help, local lawn services can help you work out the next step.

In conclusion

Piling more products onto a yard won’t make it thrive. What works is matching watering, mowing, and feeding to the grass type, the season, and the soil underneath. Texas A&M AgriLife’s bermudagrass guide explains why matching lawn care to the grass type matters. Whether it’s a DIY job or one handed to lawn services, watch how the lawn reacts and adjust things over time.
